2009 Ford Mondeo Zetec 1.8 TDCi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good car, rubbish engine

Faults:

Fuel pump.

Injectors (all of them, expensive).

Clutch.

Rust.

General Comments:

Bought this 2009 Mondeo a few years ago. An older car now, but it had full history and reasonable mileage and appeared looked after.

Gorgeous to look at and drive. Zetec model has all electrics, nice alloys and an all round fine package. Spacious. Huge boot.

The car is great to drive - handling is incredible for a large family car! 1.8 TDCi has decent power. Not as economical as I thought though - seems to do 45 mpg at VERY best, was hoping for a little more for diesel.

Still, as good as this car is, it has hit me with some very large repair bills. Some say it is common for modern diesels for the injectors to fail, but I think it may just be this 1.8 TDCi - it is not the best engine and I have heard the 2.0 TDCi is a safer bet.

So if you want a Mondeo of this generation, try and get a later 2.0 TDCi or petrol models, avoid early 1.8 TDCi's if you can! Unless you like huge repair bills.

The 1.8 TDCi is actually simpler and more reliable than the 2.0. If you have the more recent 1.8 the injectors and high pressure pump are basically the same. However, people generally seem to skimp on maintenance, especially changing the diesel filter on schedule. Most early injection failures are down to this and poor and contaminated fuel.

2009 Ford Mondeo Edge 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Still a good car for the year

Faults:

Exhaust, brakes, usual wear and tear.

Electric windows a bit hesitant to move.

Oil leak.

Clutch bite a bit high now.

General Comments:

I bought this Mondeo as I had always liked these cars. Looks good with aftermarket alloy wheels in bright silver.

Edge model is kinda basic, but the car has typical electric features for a 2009 car which are still good enough for me. Very comfortable seats. Interior is big and spacious.

Handles very nicely. 2.0 petrol engine performance is great, but won't do much more than 34 mpg which is rubbish in 2023. But the car is quiet and refined, simple to maintain, and is otherwise cheap to run. More reliable than later "ecoboost" units.

Although pretty basic and getting dated now, a petrol Mondeo of this generation is well worth considering if you can get one cheap enough. It's in great condition and I plan to keep it another few years.

2009 Ford Mondeo Edge 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not bad

Faults:

Brakes, exhaust, springs all needed attention at the last MOT.

Small oil leak, not serious.

Air con won't work.

Engine management light illuminated but went away by itself.

General Comments:

Performance and comfort of this Mondeo is excellent, but everything else is a bit... average.

2.0 petrol model is a bit of a rarity as most are diesel. Well as iffy as the reliability of diesels can be from this time period, I think I would like better economy, this petrol engine car only does 35 mpg at best. That was OK 10 or 15 years ago, but not now.

Seats are great and the car looks good in metallic black. But the Edge model is far too basic, this has front electric windows and that's about it really. Go for a Zetec or Titanium.

I use a local garage for servicing and repairs, do not go to Ford with a car of this age, they just insult you with high repair costs and try to sell you a new car, even after I explained to them I was a pensioner with not a lot of money and was just trying to nurse my old car and myself through the final years.

Not been a bad car, just a bit of an old banger that has been bought cheaply by myself as a run about. Don't know if I'd buy another though, I have had better cars.

They are good cars, I'd hang on it to it till the end, no point spending thousands on a newer diesel car just to try and save a bit on better MPG.
