2017 Hyundai Elantra LE 2.0 from North America

Nothing has gone wrong as of yet, however there is an intermittent rattle coming from somewhere in the dash... it's not all the time so I can't say exactly what or where it may be.

General Comments:

After owning the Magnum for 12 years and 223000 km, I had to make the choice whether to put a fair chunk of change into repairs or get rid of it. So after looking around the internet I saw this little Elantra listed at a nearby dealer for a good price. I called them up and scheduled an appointment to view it. I ended up buying it, so here are my thoughts.

Being six feet and 3 inches tall I was skeptical as to whether I could actually fit into the thing, but was pleased to find that leg and head room are both ample... however the back seat is another story, as the sloping roofline means my head hits the headliner back there.

The seats are comfortable and give good support... being the base model they are manual adjust.

The dash is well laid out and the instrument cluster well lit. It does have the distance to empty feature as well as your current fuel MPG.

The ride is smooth for a small car and not too noisy.

Handling is fine, but I must admit I prefer the handling of a rear drive vehicle.

Power from the 4 cylinder is adequate, although slow from the stop it has no problem maintaining speed on steep hills.

Fuel economy is great... 33 mpg city and 55 highway.

Manual A/C works well.

In all I am happy with it, I did at 300 mile trip and it performed well.

One thing I don't like... the power window switches are too far back on the armrest so they are a bit awkward to reach as I have to pull my arm back... it would not have been to hard for the engineers to locate them more forward

General Comments:

Only beware of dramatic drop in price - Depreciation - Even Hyundai doesn’t want your car if you decide to change cars!

They are as expensive as Honda/Toyota... only when they’re new. Once you drive it off the lot, it will depreciate like no other car & good luck trading it in!

I learned the hard way that buying these cars means the most significant depreciation on the market as opposed to Honda/Toyota (that’s who they compete against the most!)...

My 2 cents... Otherwise I liked the car.

I agree, it is a great car. I have a loaded Limited... I lease mine and was gonna trade it in early, and the sales manager told me that they didn't want the car because it had depreciated so much; if I do trade in, they would just give it back to Hyundai. I was told the reason is because they sell more SUVs now. Also the market is flooded with Elantras from the past 7 years. So to get the most value, I decided not to trade in and I have decided to keep it until the lease is up and give it back. I do like the new Kona though.

I have to disagree on the pricing thing. I bought an Elantra Sport for $19,495 brand new and it is essentially the same performance as a Civic Si. Sticker was almost $23K on mine with heated leather seats and sunroof standard. You can't even get the leather seats on a Civic Si, and the Civic is more expensive at the base price. It starts at over $24K.

I do agree on the depreciation, but seeing as I got mine for under $20K I'm already ahead of the game there. I plan on keeping it for a long time too, so I don't care too much. I also don't drive too much so it'll be a low mile car in even ten years, and it'll still be worth something. I tend to keep my cars up exceptionally well, which also makes a difference after 10 years as it will be an outstanding example at that point.

Anyone had cabin warming issues in winter time from new? Like hot air fluctuating and not being warm enough? On new cars.

I have one of these as a city run around vehicle. Small size allows for easier parking. I’ve had to replace all four ignition coils, looking back I should have done all four when the first one failed as I did one, then the second, and replaced the remaining two after the third time. Other than that no issues.

Hopefully the engine holds up a while yet.
