1993 Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The love of my life!!

Faults:

Nothing much really beyond wear and tear. The brake calipers needed rebuilding because the seals had gone; new ones were expensive, but found a rebuild kit online and did it myself.

It blew a couple of plugs leads after an energetic blast one day chasing a rally around the coast.

It had a strange habit of idling high occasionally when warm. It was more of a problem in the winter, and after several computer plugins that gave different answers, it was discovered it was related to the heater temp switch in the cabin. When turned up to the last (winter) it would send an electrical spike. A new controller cured it.

General Comments:

Although I have owned much faster cars since, it is by far the Xedos that stays with me. It was proper fast, handled beautifully and looked absolutely stunning. She was wine with cream leather, quite possibly the best combination, and the only reason I sold her is because I had to buy a 7 seater. The day it was sold, the local boy racer group went and called to the house, not believing that it was gone. It is by far the most recounted car by family and friends when stories are told.

It was everything you could ever want in a car. Fast, reliable, comfortable, safe, looked stunning, ladies loved it.

Whether on a back road or motorway, you could chug along at license losing/prison speeds in absolute comfort and safety.

The fuel economy was good for what it was and how it was driven. Parts where always available, if a little expensive if you went main dealer route, but it's rare it needed anything outside general servicing.

If I get the chance, I will own another one again!

1993 Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 V6 24v from Netherlands

Summary:

Quiet, reliable and comfortable car

Faults:

Front suspension left side (twice).

Wheel bearing left.

General Comments:

The car is generally underestimated. Although hardly known, it's very good value for money. Quick, reliable, comfortable, unbelievable quiet and second hand very affordable. Hardly any space on the backseats, still comparable with other cars in this class (BMW-3).

Bodywork is still in a super condition (15 years old!!)

Every inch of the car breaths quality.

Engine needs revving to perform, but is smooth enough to cruise at 1500 revs. This Xedos is up to anything.

Interior colors are from the late 1950's.

1993 Mazda Xedos 6 SE 2.0 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I will certainly be buying a new Mazda 6 next year!!

Faults:

The car immobiliser sometimes cuts the engine out for a few minutes when the car engine is started.

The steering is far too light.

Ride is very lumpy and harsh.

General Comments:

The engine is fantastic. Its extremely quick and the automatic gear box is a dream. Have beaten a Golf GT and RS Focus off the lights!

My car is 12 years old and its still extremely solid and looks great. They are rare cars and I get a lot of comments about it.

Interior is beautifully finished, leather seats lovely and comfy.

Quite a few niggle faults with air con, electric mirrors, electric windows judder and central locking, but the car is getting on a bit now.

Fuel economy is not that great compared to my Ford 2.0 TD. £10 of petrol gets a pretty bad 40-60 miles. But then again, it is a 2.0 V6.

1993 Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 V6 Auto from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Superb BMW, Audi, alternative

Faults:

Noisy Tappet - Very common on these engines.

Juddering electric window - Another common fault.

General Comments:

This car is surprisingly quick - Beats the equivalent BMW, Audi, quicker than a Lexus IS200 Sport.

Handling is actually very good - a very good compromise - firm enough to throw through corners at quite silly speeds if you're up to it yet soft enough to drive on real roads, speed bumps can be taken at a proper speed without damaging your kidneys.

Very well equipped

Very comfortable.

Gorgeous retro-Jaguar style looks.

Stupidly expensive insurance, Group 16 - far more than an equivalent BMW,Audi etc - Why?

I owned a Xedos6 2.0 from 1994 through to 2002.

2000 miles one year old when purchased, 155,000 miles when I finished.

Car was generally excellent with no serious problems during my ownership, apart from the well-known ones;

1. Seizing rear brake calipers. Finally cured by drilling a small hole into the caliper in order to lubricate the handbrake mechanism at each service.

2. Juddering driver side window - never really solved.

3. Very slight shimmy during accelerating at slow speeds - never solved in spite of attention to suspension, wheel balancing etc..

4. Tappet noise on start up.

5. ECU glitch if engine started from cold, run for a few seconds and then stopped. Re-starting an hour later could be tricky.

Other than this, everything wonderful - superb quality, distinctive, good performance for its time.
