Taken June 2005 from London, England (Gatwick Airport) - LGW to Sharm El Sheikh (Ras Nasrani) - SSH

Same plane on both journeys (G-MONJ) a Boeing 757-200 built in 1988 - must be one of the oldest planes used by the big charter companies! Inside was well kept if not dated. 3+3 configuration, very tight leg room (I think its officially quoted as 29"). Extra leg room seats - some were free during the flight, although a passenger near us asked if he could sit in one he was refused as he had not payed the fee.

We upgraded to Monarch Plus - not much extra money if you were pre-booking seats anyway! Gave us extra baggage allowance and free soft drinks and one free alcoholic drink plus wine with food.

Entertainment was limited - no films - despite their magazine stating that all long haul flights showed films! No seat back monitors - only old televisions hanging from the ceiling.

Limited drinks service which meant that we did not get that many complimentary soft drinks!

Took the crew a whole hour to distribute the headphones - this meant that the entertainment did not start until an hour in to the flight, which meant that even though there was no film we still did not see the end of the TV programmes!

Meals were OK, had better with MyTravel. Distgusting coffee. Meal tray lacked simple things like hand freshner. The upgraded meal with Mon+ was simply a substituted hot meal on the same tray. As someone who hates mushrooms - both journeys had meals with them, when the basic ones did not!

Flight times - arrived slightly early on both journeys. Not too long to wait for baggage at both ends too.

Would not fly with Monarch again - BA are commencing flights on the same route for roughly the same price. This would give us better legroom and better food/drinks etc.

The major problem I had pre holiday was with Monarchs definition of this flight being short or long haul - it would appear that the extra baggage allowance given to us as Monarch Plus was the short haul allowance, but the fee they wanted for the extra leg room seats was the long haul fee - a win win for them and a loose loose for us!! Have emailed Monarch about this - no response though!
