Taken 13 August 2006 from London, England (Heathrow Airport) - LHR to New York, NY (John F. Kennedy International Airport) - JFK

I flew out of Heathrow at the height of the security situation, but as this was out British Airway's control, I will move onto the flight itself.

My seat (4K) had three windows, which allowed me to view the chaos going on outside. As soon as I was seated, I was offered a much needed glass of Champagne. Due to the U.S. government having to approve the passenger list, we were delayed 45 minutes, suitable for an additional two glasses of Champagne prior to take off. Due to extra security, the flight was not ready to leave to until 21.30 in the evening, we then had to add another ten minutes to this for taxing, and then, just to add to the enjoyment of the day; they stopped all takeoffs and landings.

Our delay proved to be short, and we were up in the air by 22.00 - two hours later, a delay which was to prove crucial later.

Another glass of Champagne, with some canapes were offered, and then dinner was served. A Lobster and Crayfish salad was followed by a Rack of Lamb with potatoes and vegetables that would not have looked out of place at one of Gordon Ramsey's restaurants. Washed down with more than my fair share of Chateau Talbot, it truly was the best meal I have ever had on an airline. Cheese followed, but there was a great deal of choice, and from what I could of the other passengers their food was as good as mine.

The crew were excellent. attentive, and attended to my every need. After dinner I fell asleep and woke up slightly to the right of Boston.

The problem was at the end of the journey. Due to our late arrival, the British Airways terminal was closed and we had to use the International Terminal, which at Midnight must have had at least 900 people in it. This meant a waiting in line for immigration, luggage and customs for a total of 90 minutes.

I guess British Airways have no real claim over US immigration in their terminal, but it was an extremely annoying end to what had been a very frustrating day. It would have helped if British Airways had put up a notice, or made an announcement at the BA terminal letting people who were waiting to collect passengers that the terminal had been changed, but they didn't.

All in all the first class service on British Airways is excellent, but would I pay real the price for it - no way. However, as a way to use up my air miles - excellent.
