Flight LA 842 from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) to Santiago, operated by a 767-300.

As LAN are the only airline serving Rapa Nui (Easter Island), there is not much choice on the route, if you want to visit this spectacular island and fares tend to be on the high side, but if you get a round the world ticket, from Papette on to Santiago, it works out very reasonable.

The airport at Rapa Nui is small and there are only 3-4 check in desks. Saying that there was a very small queue. The business class queue was held up with a family, but the economy one was moving swiftly. LAN were offering upgrades for USD150 to business class on the day, but when I got to the counter they were sold out, but I was able to get a window seat 24 mid way up the aircraft.

Boarding was quite slow and the departure lounge was crowded. They were no boarding by seat row numbers so people just queue up outside waiting to board. Boarding when it started was swift and we were welcomed on board by a well-presented crew.

The flight attendants handed out headsets. Departure was ahead of time, after the spraying of the aircraft took place. Soon we were taking off from Rapa Nui, with the spectacular view of all the mountain volcano’s which surround the airport.

Soon after wards in-flight service took place, which was a full meal with complementary drinks. The in-flight entertainment is very good with a choice of movies and games. I was able to watch two movies on the 5 hour flight to Santiago. Seat was comfortable, but a little cramped and the seat moves into a semi reclined position when pushed back making it quite comfortable.

Crew made passes several times through out the flight with water and orange juices

Landed on time in Santiago.

Overall very smooth and comfortable flight, with a very professional crew. Meal was tasty and in-flight entertainment was superb. LAN have a very good product and are on par with many of the Asian airlines, and are way ahead of US and European airlines and the best in my opinion in South America.
