The flights between LAX and Amsterdam were operated with rather tired looking B747-406C "Combis" ("City of Jakarta" on the outbound, and "City of Calgary" on the return). The plaque inside the "City of Calgary" said it was dedicated in 1989, making it one of the oldest 747-400s still flying. Flights were delayed in both directions, and the outbound delay made for a harrowing sprint through enormous Schiphol airport to catch my connecting flight to Geneva. Business class service was adequate, but nothing special and a cut below most of KLM's competitors. The "Calgary" IFE system malfunctioned repeatedly. The food was good, but not great, although the beverage service featured some decent wines. The seats reclined to 75* but weren't true "flat" seats. Flight attendants were a bit harried and disinterested. The AMS-GVA flights were operated by KLM Cityhopper on Fokker 100 planes, all economy seating. Again, both flights were delayed and the return flight from GVA to AMS again made for a mad sprint through Schiphol Airport to catch the connecting flight to LAX. Overall, KLM offers good-but-not-great value for the price, and their business class product, while not inadequate, is a definite notch below BA, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air France or Aer Lingus. | ||
