I would have given Thai 10/10 if the terrific service on board the B747 and A340 were the only criteria. The cabin crew are excellent and epitomise the happy smiley people you expect from Thailand. So what went wrong with the airport lounges, Thai? Compared to Malaysia's fabulous Heathrow lounge, the shared SAS lounge that Thai use is, quite frankly, boring and does not set the journey off to a special start. The Bangkok lounges are also nothing special and the staff seem quite dour. The complimentary neck and back massage was delightful as were the clean and spacious shower facilities so it wasn't altogether a failure. Just not special. Didn't want to eat any of the odd snacks offered... savoury pastries? What's wrong with Thai street food like noodles, satay, fish cakes and all that delicious Thai cuisine. What they offered me was rubbish really. And another niggle.. the complimentary razors are blunt. So much so it hurt to try to have a shave. Blunt razors in both directions so probably not a one off. I really think Thai need to reconsider the standards expected by their business class passengers. After all, they have paid dearly for the privilege. Take a leaf out of Malaysia's book. They seem to have got it about right. The shared lounge in Auckland was a bit crowded, but excellent. Good food and drink, computers that work, smiling staff and a nice atmosphere to enjoy whilst waiting for the long flight home. IFE on Thai is first class. Food on board pretty good if not exceptional, nice wines, not quite lay flat seats, but reasonably comfy to sleep in, good ground handling and really, really lovely cabin crew. So, on balance, a good experience in the air and for such a long, long journey, money well spent I feel.
