Flew out and inbound on Monarch's A330-200. The seats have been freshly re-covered (new material) since the last time I flew on this aircraft to Calgary in Canada in 2006. There was still only limited IFE on the overhead TV screens and the seat pitch (width in particular) was still tight for anyone of around 6 feet tall. So in terms of comfort, the plane lags well behind First Choice's (now Thomas Cook) and Thomson's (TUI) wide body planes. We were the very last to check in inbound and were at the back of the aircraft in the middle (the aircraft was not full, especially at the back). We had the ridiculous scenario of all the window seats being free at the back, because apparently these seats offer 6 inches more leg room and you have to pay £35 more for this. In spite of being with someone in my group who had only flown for the 1st time this holiday (and he was keen to look out of the window), the air stewards did not allow anyone to sit in these seats. In summary, I would like to re-name Monarch the "Mean Airline" of 2008. The only saving grace was the flights were on time (a first for Monarch in my experience, as a Manchester flight on a 767 departing the same time as us was delayed, so it must have just been good luck on our side).
