We have traveled with Jet Blue before, and usually have a good experience. However, on our return flight to Boston (4/4/09), once the plane was fully boarded, the attendant announced that there was an individual with a "severe peanut allergy" on board. Therefore, all peanut products had been removed from the aircraft, and passengers were instructed that we could not consume any peanut products! I do not believe that this was appropriate. Passengers with "special needs" should not be inconvenienced in such a manner without at least prior notification. What about those of us (myself included) who need to limit our sugar/salt intake? The options left to us (I always get the cashews for example) for the only food on board were: chips, salty snacks, and cookies. As a health care provider, I feel comfortable in saying that there are many objective studies about whether or not environmental exposure to nuts causes "severe" reactions. I believe that one of two actions should have been taken: either the passenger should have made his/her needs know prior to boarding and seated in an area away from the nuts, or passengers should have been apprised of the situation prior to boarding so that they could make provisions to bring "safe" food items (that met their own dietary restrictions) on the plane. Please review your policy/procedures regarding this controversial issue. Thank you.
