Taken May 2002 from Johannesburg to Perth

A bit of an unprofessional airline.

Price was OK in the end, but they insist you book ridiculously far in advance. If they are that short of capacity, why not buy more planes?

Legroom a tad small, but not any worse than other airlines. Seats weren't very good - no integral leg rests and no adjustable ears. Also a bit thin. Much as it hurts me to say this, they should send their senior people on a BA flight.

Check-in staff were stupid. Plain stupid. Do they recruit them from the local asylum???

I was flying to Perth for a 1 day layover and then flying on the the Isle of Man. I tried to check my bags right through, but they were unhappy. "Were is Isle of Man?" in pidgin English.

I had an electronic visa for Australia. This confused them no end. It was as if they never operate flights to Australia!

Conclusion:

1. A more predictable fare structure.

2. Re-fit the fleet.

3. Sack all the JNB check-in staff.

4. Insist on minimum literacy (in English!!) standards for all workers.

5. Is it too much to ask that aeroplanes park at the gate and not miles away by bus???

6. Sort out the shopping area in departures. It is amateurish. Too many "African music" shops.

7. Rename the inflight magazine. It is not pronouncable to non-Africans.
