Taken October 2003 from London Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore

It's not often that I fly Singapore Airlines, mostly because I prefer to collect frequent flyer mileage on Cathay Pacific's programme. However, this was an especially attractive business class offer, whereby the second person could fly half-price, so it was too good to ignore.

I was looking forward to trying the much-trumpeted Space Bed, and I have to say that along with the in-flight service, it was exceptional!!! Although the seat is flat, it tilts at a slight angle, meaning that if you are any taller than 5' 8", your feet are going to be a bit squashed under the passenger in front. In this instance you're better off with the exit row seats on the upper deck.

Another excellent facility is the Krisworld entertainment system with an extensive film, TV and music selection: some of the movies shown weren't even on general release in cinemas yet, and there was also new episodes of Will & Grace, and Frasier. The audio section had a dozen or so hit albums on demand too.

The menu offered Western and Asian dishes, and on the whole was tasty. There's only so much you can do with inflight cuisine and by the end of this return trip, I didn't want to look at any more food.

A tip for anyone who usually likes to break up the journey because of the long journey time: the Space Bed makes a huge difference and allows some decent sleep. Even if you don't want to sleep, there is enough to keep you entertained. After nearly 22 hours flying I felt relatively awake and ready to go. This, along with BA's new Club World, is one the best business classes around.
