Taken January 2004 from London, England (Heathrow Airport) - LHR to Athens (Athinai) (Hellinikon International Airport) - ATH
Olympic used to have a bit of a bad rep, but I've never experienced this. I fly to Greece at least 4/5 times per year and always with Olympic when possible. I find on the Heathrow - Athens route, it's pot luck with the plane. You sometimes get the A340-300 (this is usually used on OA's USA/Canada/South Africa route only) and the plane is fabulous, brand new with the little TV in the back of the seat in front of you. The more usual plane is the A300, again not bad a with a 2-4-2 layout. On the rare occaision, you get a Boeing, then poor you, they suck. But with Olympic, they still serve a hot meal which a lot of airlines don't. The food is always best on flight from Athens, this is because the food's prepared in Greece. The drinks are still free which is really good. The cabin crew speak perfect Greek and English. Plus they have the personal touch, in February of this year, I was disembarking in Athens and the outside temperature was about 2oC. As I was leaving the plane, the stewardess grabbed hold of me and pulled me into the galley. She took my coat from my arm and held it for me to put it on, she said "I don't want you to catch cold" so I put it on. Now, I'm a 24 year old male and that little personal touch did it for me. I'll never fly anyone, but Olympic (unless it get shut down in 2005 as threatened in the Greek newspaper Kathimerini). |
