2005 Fiat Idea Active 1.4 16V from Germany

Summary:

Not a bad MPV. Relatively simple and easy to maintain

Faults:

The idle is somewhat unstable, frequently caused by dirt accumulated in the throttle body/intake, which causes the revolutions to rise and fall.

The car loses power and feels somewhat sluggish, especially when loaded.

Failures in the phase sensor (camshaft) and speed sensor, causing difficult starts or fuel cutoffs.

The Fire 1.4 engine has heat-sensitive piston rings, which can lead to higher oil consumption than expected.

General Comments:

For a relatively small MPV, the car is surprisingly spacious inside. The first impression you get when you get in is that it's a tall car, a bit taller than average. This isn't a problem for me, but it might be a little uncomfortable for shorter people, though not too much.

I was looking for a family MPV for four people (it can fit five or even more) to replace my old Corsa, and between the Meriva and the Fusion, I decided on the Idea, which at the time was only slightly more expensive than the Fusion, but cheaper than an Ignis or a Meriva.

I must say that the car, while not spectacular, met my expectations.

The quality of the plastics isn't bad (which is unusual for a Fiat). In over 10 years, nothing has worn out, and it also has all the features of a higher-end car. It handles very well in the city and you can park it just as easily anywhere as a smaller car. On the highway, and with some weight, it loses power, but nothing out of the ordinary; overtaking will just be a little more difficult.

The engine is good and quite reliable, despite some occasional oil leaks, but it's perfectly adequate for this car. As for fuel consumption, it's around 6 liters per 100 km, which I don't find high, considering it's a petrol engine in a minivan. However, it will depend a lot on driving style. On the highway at a steady 120 km/h, it consumes considerably less and feels comfortable.

The car's design, at least to my taste, isn't bad. Keep in mind that we're talking about an MPV from the mid-2000s; cars of that type were all more or less the same.

It's a car you can get a lot of use out of; it won't give you any major headaches.

2014 Fiat Idea Adventure E-torQ 1.6 petrol from Greece

Summary:

Fun, pretty, but not economical

Faults:

I've had the car since I bought it when it was new; so far the problems I've encountered are:

Camshaft Damage: The camshaft can shear, causing one or more cylinders to stop working and a loss of engine compression.

Carbonized Valves: Engine valves, especially the intake valves, can become carbonized and burned, even developing a hole in one of them, and they must be replaced completely.

Lack of Compression: The combination of these problems, such as worn valves and piston rings, results in a loss of compression in the cylinders.

Cooling System Damage: I have repeatedly encountered problems with the engine's cooling system, which can be easily fixed by simply checking it without the need for major modifications.

General Comments:

This particular model is a crossover imported from South America (not made in Europe) for certain markets, including Greece, so you don't see them much on the road.

You could say it's similar to the Panda, but larger and prettier.

For its small size, it has plenty of room inside, easily accommodating five people, and there's even room in the trunk for a bicycle. Ample legroom and good headroom allow even tall adults to travel comfortably, both front and rear.

The seat is height-adjustable and the steering column can be adjusted, promoting a good driving position. The doors have a good opening angle, making access to the passenger compartment easier. The vehicle includes useful elements such as a mirror to observe children, storage trays and a rearview mirror with an anti-glare option.

Being a cross-country vehicle, you don't have as many problems crossing speed bumps or streets in poor condition, although you always have to be relatively careful.

The 1.6 e. Torq engine is smooth and quiet, and while it may feel a bit sluggish at the bottom of the rev range, it offers good overall responsiveness for the average user, making the vehicle practical for urban use and getaways.

It's not very economical; around 8 l/100 km in the city doesn't seem like a match for a 1.6-liter. To this day, I regret not buying it with a diesel engine; for this type of car, it's more functional and cost-effective.

Beyond that, the engine is quite reliable, having not given me any problems in almost 200,000 km.

2007 Fiat Idea Emotion 16V 90 1.3 Multijet turbodiesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Underrated workhorse

Faults:

Cold-start problems, especially when it's not in the garage. After several attempts, it starts perfectly.

For the first 5,000-8,000 miles, it consumed more oil than expected, even with significant leaks; this is what gave me the most difficulty. It wasn't until after two years that I was able to fully repair it.

The check engine light usually comes on, fortunately without affecting the car's normal operation.

General Comments:

Until I got the Idea, I wasn't very friendly with Mini MPVs, but compared to cars in its same class, it was the one I liked the most, and I bought it for very little money (£1,400 four years ago).

I was really pleasantly surprised. The car is truly spacious and comfortable. For me, being single, there's plenty of room, but a normal family can easily enjoy this car. The quality of the accessories isn't necessarily the best, but for being almost 20 years old, it's still in pretty good condition.

As for driving, it's very comfortable and stable, very quiet. You can drive at 90-100 mph with complete stability and without any annoying noises.

Very useful for daily use, its greatest virtue is its low fuel consumption, which for me is even lower than the manufacturer's stated fuel consumption. I get less than 4.5L/60 miles. Truly brilliant.

Special mention for the 1.3 MultiJet engine:

Indestructible, very good performance, and, despite its small size, it has plenty of power for a small car like the Idea. It hasn't given me a single problem since I've had it, even though I don't know how it was treated before.

For the ridiculously low price I bought it for, I never thought it could have been so good and reliable.
