1984 Subaru GL Sports Wagon review from Australia and New Zealand
"This is a car of steel"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When I bought the car, it was from a farm and I know it needed some work done to it, but the worst of it was cleaning it, it took 2 day to do that!!
The CV joint on right hand side went, and I got the fixed ASAP, because the steering was getting really bad.
The car eats some oil, and so I put some good oil in it and that helped a little. Changed the oil filters and the oil dipper broke when I was filling it up.
Then the steering rack went and I could not find one in Canberra, so I got one from Adelaide, and when I was talking to them, they said this was one of the first cars they know of to do that.
Recently the points closed and wouldn't open, so I had to get a new one, which cost a bit.
General comments?
Well for starters, this car can pull a 1 tonne trailer. That inpressed me because it's a 1.8 and a 1983 car, and I thought that it couldn't do it, but it did.
When pulling up hills, the car can rev to about 3,000, but hitting around 4,000 it starts to choke a little bit, but I have got it up to 6,000 with no problems, but it is not a revvy car.
The car is pretty high tech for its age with powersteering and aircon, and the 4WD on and off control. The best bit is in some models is the car looking thing next to the speedo that tells you when someone's door is open and 4wd drive mode etc.
This car loves 4wd as you can push it as far as she goes and the car loves it. But because it's an old car, the seats have worn out, but this is normal in these cars I think.
It is a old car, but it will never stop. It's a great car for a farm car or a A to B car. It's an oldie, but a goodie.
