1987 Pontiac Fiero SE review from North America
"The Firebird's Little Bro with a BIG ATTITUDE!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The cam lobes were worn. This was causing an eradic idle between 700-2900 rpm. This was making shifting almost impossible, and I went through a brand new clutch in almost 1200 miles because of it.
Most of my vaccuum lines were melted.
Lets get a few Fiero myths and FAQ's cleared up right here...
Not all Fieros are prone to engine fires. Only the 84-85 fieros were prone to fires, due to smaller oil pans.
You are not likely to die in a head on collision. Yes the engine is mid mounted behind the driver, but believe it or not, the fiero was ranked best in the small car crash for a head-on collision up to 35 miles per hour.
Parts for this car are hard to find and costly, because Pontiac Fiero only had parts exclusive to itself. I don't recall any Fiero parts being interchangeable with other Pontiac or GM cars.
It is difficult to change the 3 rear sparkplugs. You need to loosen up the "dogbone" strut, and do some motor shimmying.
General comments?
This was a COOL CAR!
Even though the cam problem ultimately got tiring to deal with, This car was F'N fast!!! A 6cyl, 5 speed demon, and light as hell.
The car takes turns at high speeds as if it were a Formula Race Car.
The engine growl was exciting to hear. And with all the different gauges to look at, and the unique setup of the dash and interior, made this car Darth Vader's weekend vehicle. It was comfortable to sit low, and have my shifter arm raised up high like an arm of a couch.
This mid-mounted car was ahead of its time. It's a shame Pontiac does not create an anniversary edition of this car.
