1986 Plymouth Reliant LE review from North America
"Gets you from point A to point B.. 85% of the time"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Both front wheel bearings have gone.
Floor rotted through.
Alternator replaced.
Map sensor replaced.
Wire harness associated with the fan has a break somewhere, causing the engine to flood all of the time.
Seized brake calipers.
Bizarre power failures (whenener I signal left, I
lose all electronics, this is fixed by restarting the car).
Signal arm replaced.
Transmission leak(s).
Catalytic converter rotted out.
Adhesive on ceiling let go, causing fabric to come down on me.
Various rust spots, despite rust checks and undercoating.
Rear suspension replaced.
Water pump replaced.
Put a shim in the alternator to quiet the belt from squeeling (it loves squeeling), which did nothing but squeel more (I have kicked a few belts on the highway, since the alernator drives the water pump I lost coolant to the engine... oops! Good thing it was winter).
Radiator replaced twice due to leaks.
Clamps rotted out, and kicked themselves off.
The car makes anamalistic weird noises, which I have not found the source of in 3 years.
My dad's qoute for the car is "it is part of the adventure to keep it running". I haven't really seen the "adventure" yet.
General comments?
Despite falling apart, and friends being concerned about riding in this car at high speeds, it lasted me for 3 years, and was inexpensive enough to be able to buy a new car in cash. This is great for a student, a grandma, or an idiot.
