2002 Acura MDX review from North America
"Nice car. Fix the transmission problems!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
We have owned the car for 60 days. Soon after we bought the car the check engine light came on. Went to the dealer and they could not find a trouble code. They reset something and cleared the light. 2 weeks after that the light came back on. Since they didn't find anything the first time my wife let it go. The car seemed to be running well. Made our first payment on the car on 8/2. The very next day the transmission failed. Took the car to an Acura repair shop and they said that 3rd gear was gone. I called the dealer and told them what was going on. They had me take the car to a transmission shop that they use. Did they think that 3rd gear was going to magically re appear?? It didn't and that shop said the same thing. Shop #1 $2700 for a rebuilt tranny. Shop #2 $2200 for them to re build. I called the dealer to let them know their mechanic found and the estimate that they had. The dealership told me to come down and look at some other vehichles. If we found something that we liked they would "make things right". We did this. Found another vehichle that we liked. Went in to make the deal and they came back with $10,200 for my Acura. I had just paid $18750 with taxes for the car. After I finished laughing I asked when they were going to make things right. They said that that was all that they could do since I didn't purchase a warranty. I purposely did not by a warranty since it did not cover anything electrical. Since my car has the navigation system and all of the controls are located in that system I figured that the warranty was a waste of money. Not thinking that the transmission would fail at 72k miles. Thanks Heuberger of Colorado Springs. You really made things right.
I did some more research and found out that Acura had a recall on the 02 transmissions. I called Honda of North America and they said that the transmission on my car was replaced under the recall 10/04. Wonderful I said. I get to do this every three years. Shame on you Honda/ Acura!!!
General comments?
Other than the transmission failing, the car is not bad. Downsized from a Tahoe to save on gas. It does get descent mileage for a SUV. It has a good ride and plenty of storage space. We really like the 3rd row seats. Gets great gas mileage right now. Oh Yeah, it's in the shop.
