1992 Ford Escort GT review from North America
"Surprisingly fast performance bargain"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing has gone wrong with the car. Starts, runs, and drives fine.
General comments?
I'm not a fan of domestic made cars, but I always thought to myself that the only domestic car I would buy would be a ford Escort GT, (mainly the 91 and 92 model year with the three piece spoiler) I decided that I would look to buy one for my next car. After I did some research and found out that it had a MAZDA 1.8L DOHC engine as the powerplant I was hooked. I also have a 91 protege with the same engine, it's just a SOHC. I beat the crap out of the protege every day, takin it to redline and dropping the clutch (still has the stock clutch at 175,000 miles!!) So I knew I could trust the engine and drivetrain. I found a good deal on a local one ($850) and picked it up. The owner before me had taken out the A/C, made a cold air intake with a RX-7 VAF, and advanced the ignition 16 degrees. At that point it was a lot faster then my protege, and revved fairly easily to the 7,200rpm fuelcut. After I got it home I took out the WHOLE interior from the front seats back (including sound deadening/everything) The car was again noticeably faster. (It only weighs 2,200-2,300 lbs stock) Next on my list I did the exhintake swap (you swap a stock exhaust cam in place of the intake cam, dynoed at a 25hp increase and 15ft-lbs over stock!!) While I was doing the cam swap I also removed all the power steering and windshield washer components. The car now makes tons of power all the way to redline. (very noticeable from 4,500rpm to redline) From a stop it will smoke the tires (upgraded to 205's) up to 3000rpm and then smoke them again from 5000-7000rpm. The car will surprise a lot of people from a stop or a role. Future plans include port and polish, deck the head to increase compression ratio, adjustable cam gears, tubular header, E-manage piggyback, SS valves with 3 angle valve job, and titanium valve springs. If I’m still not happy with the performance I will also be supercharging it. If anyone has any questions email me at g60_corrado_90@yahoo.com And it is now faster then my 1990 corrado g60 supercharged.
