1996 Jeep Cherokee cherokee review from North America
"96, the most reliable year of them all"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Those that know, know 96 had a lot of 1 year only options.
-last year of that body style
-first year of the different cam
-first year obd2
-extra stiffening in the body
-first year of the different rear axle
the list goes on.
Bottom line it is the most reliable year Cherokee made, before Chrysler got a hold of it and made a few changes in 97 (although 97-99 are still pretty good).
Then of course in 00 Chrysler screwed it up and removed the distributor, changed the head to one that was more prone to have problems if it over heated, etc etc.
My 96, put gas in it and tires and it runs perfect.
Cheapest and most reliable vehicle you can buy.
20-22mpg for a 4wd SUV is excellent for something 11 years old.
Few 4wd SUV's manage that today regularly with 10 years worth of newer technology, yet some still consider the jeep's mileage bad.
It doesn't get bad unless you start putting bigger tires on it or a lift.
General comments?
I drive it 100miles a day.
I have no complaints.
There will always be people that complain that the brakes wear out or the tires didn't last 100,000 miles.
These people don't understand wearable parts or the easy maintence to replace them.
