1990 Toyota MR2 review from Australia and New Zealand
"I love my MR2 GT!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The axle seal came loose, and was sliding along the axle, which caused the gearbox oil to leak out. I didn't notice this, but when I went to get an oil change they pointed this out to me and said I had about 1 days driving left on it before the gearbox blew. So that was very lucky!
The speedo needed to be calibrated, as it was reading about 20kmh lower than the actual speed is was travelling. Also the speedo stopped working all together.
The targa top leaked just like every other T-top, but just replaced the seals.
General comments?
This is the most fun car I have ever driven. It loves to be driven and just sticks to the road. Going from my Integra to this rear wheel drive turbo was a rather intimidating at first. Once I got use to this, it is the most fun I have ever had driving. I just want to drive everywhere.
This car is an absolute wee rocket ship. Fantastic performance. It loves the low revs and loves the hills. Despite this, it is actually pretty fuel efficient, as long as you don't floor it all the time.
The MR2 isn't the most practical car, but if you buy one you obviously aren't wanting it for the space =). But the boot is plenty big enough for me, and I haven't had any problems with it.
All this with Toyota reliability, you can't go wrong with an MR2. I highly recommend them!
