2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport review from Australia and New Zealand
"Love it"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
O2 sensor died twice, replaced under warranty by dealer both times.
Automatic transmission wouldn't shift to any gear other than 2nd or reverse. Happened once at normal running temperature. Easy fix has been to turn engine off and back on. Dealer hasn't been able to retrieve any error codes, but will investigate during next service.
General comments?
Pretty quick and lots of fun to drive, especially with the top down.
Great power up to 100 km/h.
Over 100 it becomes a bit sluggish, 3 speed automatic transmission (4 speed with overdrive) to blame here. Under full acceleration:
Shift 1st to 2nd happens at ± 50 km/h
shift 2nd to 3rd happens at ± 100 km/h
This means that over 100 kmh it will not kick down in 2nd, and 3rd gear ratio being 1.000, acceleration is a bit slow which can be a problem for overtaking, especially if going uphill.
Not the most comfy car ever (suspension) but it's not meant to be, it's a Jeep so it has to handle off road, which it does perfectly.
Good seats mean that I can do 1200kms in one blow (3 legs, due to having to refuel (±60 litres) every 400 kms) without any back aches.
Due to it being a RWD when not in 4wd mode and having a lot of power, this car is very happy to stick its tail out (over-steer) on tight turns or roundabouts, especially when wet. It's lots of fun when you want it to, but have been caught off-guard a few times. Short wheel base makes it very tricky to control if it starts to slide and you don't expect it.
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, it has its flaws, but the styling and the fun this Jeep provides more than make up for it. I totally fell in love with it and hope it will last forever. Even gave it a name :-P.
