1998 Jeep TJ Sahara review from North America
"It's a member of the family"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Instrument Cluster Connection - Recall repaired under warranty.
Bad Spark plug wire at 10,000 miles. - Replaced under warranty.
Fuel quantity sending unit 30,000 (Off road abuse) - Fuel quantity often miss reported. When it reads empty it has 7+/- gal in it insted of empty. - Never fixed it because I reset the trip odometer at every fill up.
Warped front roaters at 40,000 miles - Replaced with stock part.
Radiator leak at 70,000 miles. - Replaced with Aluminum Radiator.
Bent Rear Dana 35 Axel tubes at 70,000 miles. (abuse off road) - Replaced with Dana 44 rear end and heavy duty axles at the time a 6" lift kit and rear Drum to Disk conversion.
Exhaust Header cracked at 80,000 miles - aparently a design flaw common to 4.0L I-6 from 1991 to 1999. - Replaced with aftermarket performance part.
General comments?
This vehicle is ultra reliable. Every time I stick the key in it starts and takes me where ever I want to go.
It is fun to drive especially in the summertime w/o top.
Easy to care for. Heavy aftermarket support with tons of replacment/performance/fun parts avaliable.
Cheap to operate - Gas mileage could be better, but before the lift kit I got 20 mpg and all I did was change the oil and put gas in it. In a disposable world of junk cars that fall apart after 4 years it's nice to have a vehical worth taking care of.
