1999 Chevrolet Malibu LS review from North America
"These cars are junk, and GM will lose even more of its market share"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Here are the problems I have had, and most have recurred over and over, within and outside of the warranty.
Brakes - 20k miles - rotors and calipers. GM told me it was because I used the brakes too much. They asked if I delivered pizzas. These were all freeway miles.
Wheel sensors and bearings. Replaced several times. Gave up on the dealer who was making all kinds of money with no results.
Intake manifold - three times. Once in warranty and two time out.
Brake harnesses and ABS module. They wanted $750 for the module. All the module is are a couple of transistors. The mark up on these is easily several thousand percent. Never fixed. I don't need ABS to drive.
Various emissions leaks and sensors. Never fixed all of them because they keep failing.
Fuel sock & filter. Air conditioning switch. Blower switch. Dome light. More, but I have to go find info on how to fix the fuel sock in the fuel tank. Good luck!!!
General comments?
I bought this car new, and have had problems ever since. I have driven GM cars since my first, and this will be the last. What makes it worse is that GM DOES NOT STAND BEHIND ITS CARS OR DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS.
Too many issues to get into detail. There is a class action suit on the intake manifold and details are being worked out. Find a lawyer; you may be reimbursed for intake repairs and hazard switch replacements. NHTSA site has a list of recalls as well. This car will go to the junk yard because I cannot sell it to someone else with a good conscious. GM could though as they just released the "new" Malibu.
These cars are junk and I cannot believe GM is selling the "new" Malibu. Are these guys out of touch? Wow. Time for an import. Sorry American Workers - GM, I will tell everyone I know about your poor quality and policies as long as I live.
