1998 Dodge Dakota SLT review from North America

"Powerful, strong, fuel sucker"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Motor blew at 69000 due to a moron mechanic advancing the timing when I brought it for a tune-up (I got even).

Destroyed rear u-joints due to rebuilt motor; it has 300+ hp and me doing smoke shows with 12.5 inch wide bfg's (won't fit without a body lift).

$600 worth of front end damage due to me hitting a 2 foot pine stump at an offroad park.

Windshield washer motor quit working. Hence the reason I hit the stump (muddy windshield).

Battery quit at around 64000 due to my girlfriend listening to the radio for hours at a time while I was dirtbiking without starting the truck. I replaced it with a big deep cycle battery that was intended for a RV.

General comments?

The truck is pretty quick. Even before the rebuild, I had beaten a 4.0 HO Ranger, 4.3 S-10 SS, 350 Vortec Silverado, Subaru legacy GT, countless Hondas and other fartcan-mobiles. Met my match in an Acura Legend 3.2 V6. Got my ass kicked by my mom in her Mustang (humiliating).

The handling was OK. The limited slip rear end tended to want to push the truck straight when turning, but the suspension is good. Now I'm running super swamper TSLs and it rides like a brick.

Before the swampers, it rode very quiet, which kinda sucked because I paid for dual exhaust and I want to hear it.

Fuel mileage is pathetic; I'm currently getting 10.6, although I do have a lead foot. My girlfriends dad borrowed it, and when he came back the computer read 18.3, which is pretty good.

The 4x4 works awesome. It has the part-time 4x4 full time and low, and it has an anti-slip front axle (I don't know if they all have it, but it says it in my glove box).
