1993 Chevrolet Caprice review from North America

"Absolute best large car ever made- how can I give a rating higher than "10"?"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The only thing outside of normal maintenance items that needed to be replaced were a driver's side power window switch around 120k, alternator around 100k, water pump around 120k, horn button around 100k (only one was working) and a glove box latch (probably due to teenager jumping into the front seat and smashing into the glove box.)

Normal maintenance items that have been replaced:

brake rotors, brake pads (two sets.)

All in all, a reliable car with incredibly low life cycle cost. My cost per mile, including all maintenance and original purchase price ($3,500 in 2003) has to be lower than just about any other used vehicle out there, due to reliability and low cost of replacement parts.

General comments?

Sadly, these cars are not made any longer and the newest examples out there are 12 years old now.

Fuel economy- very good for a big car. Generally average 20 MPG summer/ 18 MPG winter in normal use (50% freeway, 50% stoplight city.) Best observed MPG 27+ on freeway in mountains of central PA with cruise on 75 MPH. These MPG figures are actual calculated number and using a calibrated odometer.

Fuel economy with 3.42:1 rear axle (changed for towing.)

I've found GM cars of this vintage do much better MPG wise than the competition.

Performance- Not a rocket off the line with the 305 TBI engine. Later model years with LT1 (9C1 cop car, Impala SS) a different story! But, they are only cars out there that can tow 5,000 lbs! Towed more than that to race tracks many times. Trailer brakes and weight distribution hitch needed for these loads.

Styling- not so hot. think police car or taxi cab.

Interior- styling not so hot on base trim level. Solid bench seat in front decent for long highway trips. Wish it had power split bench or buckets.
