1995 Buick Riviera review from North America
"Money pit, but comfortable"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 175,000 miles both belts were cracked and shredding and the tensioner pulley that connected them both broke (because it's plastic) and the part was specially made by buick for that one car so the plastic part was $85 alone. (belts were ~$50-60 each)
Crack in my radiator (they say on brief glance)..so my coolant leaks constantly (i have to keep a supply in my car)
Windshield wipers won't turn off even after stopping and restarting and squirting the wiper fluid.
Air conditioning/heat decides when it wants to work on its own.
Fuel meter doesn't work (stays on full for ~90 miles, ~100 miles between full and half-full, and ~100 miles between half-full and empty)...you can't use the fuel gauge to determine how much gas you have, you have to look at how many miles you've traveled.
Car shakes around in middle speeds... fine at lower and around 70.
Car has begun knocking sound that I thought was the belts, but they have both been replaced...
Unlocking the door with the actual key sometimes sets the alarm off, which can only be stopped by re-locking and unlocking the door with the key... same with if you get inside the car, lock the door, unlock it from the inside, and open the door. (you have to lock and unlock with the key.)..this is very embarrassing in the mornings when everyone is asleep and in parking lots where it looks like I'm stealing my own car.
I'm assuming it's b/c of the supercharged, but the car gets horrible gas mileage... it holds ~17 gallons and I only get ~300 miles out of a tank. (~17.65 mpg average)..this is about equal hwy and city miles.
There is a piece hanging down from the front from wiring, and have been told that it tells the engine how hot it is, but it 's not reconnected and the heat gauge works fine.
General comments?
The air conditioning/heat mechanism is tricky... you have to change the air temperature by degrees (60 degrees up to 90 degrees electronically)..i wish it were a little more simple (dial moving air from cold to hot and in between) because the different temperature don't make much of a difference... you have to sit and wait forever while you move from 60 to 90 if you want heat.
Everybody loves my car (because it has a nice body style and good looking interior) but I am always surprised because so much goes wrong with it and it costs so much money in repairs (more than it's worth at this point). I consider it my junky car while I am in college.
