2000 Cadillac DeVille DTS review from North America
"Great car; just needs a few kinks worked out"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Back right regulator and switch blew around 95,000 miles ($600).
2 cylinders needed to be replaced at 100,000 miles ($350).
Catalytic converter replaced at 130,000 miles ($400).
Check coolant light will not go out after having coolant changed and serviced.
Now the engine has a high pitch squeal when started while the engine is idling high.
Oil needs to be put back in every 2500 miles or so.
Very small cup holders that can barely hold small cups from your local fast food restaurants.
General comments?
The DTS is an OK car, but there are a few issues that can cost the owner a lot of money in the stretch. My DTS, after several trips to the dealer and shop, has been a constant run around of what is the problem and what is not the problem.
Don't get me wrong. The car rides smooth at all speeds, and takes pot holes and speed bumps without knocking me and everyone around. But the car power steering does cut out sometimes while I am slowing down and turning at the same time, and the on board computer malfunctions a lot by giving bad readings.
Along with the bad there is the good; I am a college student and I work some 40 miles from my school, and I get great gas mileage with that V8 when the oil is just changed. About 25 miles to the gallon, and when the oil needs to be changed about 22 or 23, and that’s traveling about 80 mph.
The interior is very spacious and comfortable for me and my friends. Each one us stand at about 6 feet or taller (me being 6'2).
The sound system is great.
My advice to anyone who is thinking about buying one is to make sure you have a good mechanic who can do your work for you. My previous car, which I still own, is a 96 Camry and it has been to the shop twice, and that was to replace a starter and the front left axle went, but that’s it. That car has 225,000 and stills runs like new.
So to sum it up, I wasn’t expecting so much trouble out of the car, but it is an American car and we are taking better and farther strides in making better cars, so with every Pro there is a Con, and when the new rear wheel drive DTS comes out, I will purchase one.
