1999 Dodge Pickup review from North America
"Could have been a money pit"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Where do I start?
35,000 miles pinging noise from engine, belly pan gasket repaired extended warranty covered. 2 speed sensors replaced, one in tranny, one on rear diff, extended warranty covered.
40,000 miles rpm jumps when truck on cruise control or going through a dip in the road, dealership couldn't find any codes to fix problem, finally at 75,000 miles I replaced throttle position sensor $26, fixed problem that dealership couldn't. Cup holder broke, cheap plastic, sun glass holder broke, cheap plastic.
50,000 miles tranny went, had to fight with warranty company, broke tail gate straps putting motorcycle in bed taking truck to dealership to fix tranny, rattling noise from cat converter, extended warranty company doesn't cover it, 1 month later recall, dealership covers converter, but no labor, cost me $150.
60,000 Radio stopped working extended warranty covered it, speaker blew also extended warranty covered it, water pump stopped working, extended warranty covered.
70,000 dashboard cracked, cheap plastic.
73,523 miles extended warranty runs out, front end ball joints bad, replaced myself, $80, hours worth of pounding with sledge hammer, check engine light comes on, no codes in computer, unhooked battery and replaced spark plugs, problem fixed.
80,000 air conditioner done, tried to rip out dashboard to cut cost of repair, entire dash needs to come out. $700 to replace condenser under dash, repair shop threw in a couple of free parts that were also leaking. Truck now over heats. Replaced thermostat and hoses, $4 and hours of fun.
90,000 miles, truck drifts while driving, lots of play in the wheel, tightened steering wheel bearings, still drifts, need to replace steering bearings, o well makes me feels like I'm driving a tractor trailer, paint peeling off roof and hood.
Put new rotors/brakes on, warped new rotor after 5,000 miles, had them turned, warped them again after another 5,000 miles, driving with it.
95,000 two speed sensors broke, fixed myself $75 one on tranny, other on rear diff. Blew out back window with 4 wheeler, $0 thanks State farm, guy that replaced window did nothing but complain about how difficult Dodges are to work on.
100,000 truck still overheating, I can hear a small pin hole leak, can't find it, and only overheats stop and go traffic, but just drive around with 3 gallons of water in bed. Put Michelin tires on truck at 40,000 miles and believe the tires will last longer.
I had a 72 Challenger with the same 318 engine with 4 barrel carb, which got better mpg. It was hit by another car twice, both their cars were totaled, bent my bump a little bit on the first one, never replaced, damaged front quarter panel on second one, $150 replacement panel. I paid $1500 for it from brother in-law with 150,000 miles on it, drove it for 7 years never replaced anything, but brakes and tires, sold it for $1500 with 278,000 miles on it, never should have sold it.
$1500 for extended warranty
A list of things the warranty covered
$2500 for tranny
$400 for belly pan gasket
$75 speed sensors
$250 for new radio
$150 mirror motor
$15 tail gate straps
$150 speaker replacement
$3540 total covered.
My advice if you purchased a Dodge.
Have a motorcycle so you can get to work when it breaks, and purchased the extended warranty.
