1986 Chevrolet Camaro Sport Coupe review from North America
""One of the best cars EVER made.""
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I replaced the carburetor recently (still had the original from '86).
Had to replace the front wheel bearings, alternator and put a new battery in it.
New fuel filters, fuel lines.
General comments?
The car had been sitting for quite a while when I first bought it. (About 2 years, unstarted) I paid 2,000 dollars for the car, the body was in great shape, as was the suspension/drivetrain. Once I gave it a basic tune up and replaced a few faulty parts that had gone bad due to sitting for so long, I took it for a run. It clocked in from 0-60 in 6.4 seconds and ran a quarter mile at 114mph in 14.7 seconds. I found out soon thereafter that it had a mild cam installed, roller rockers, and the heads had been previously ported and polished.
It's lightning quick thru corners, hanging onto the road as if it were riding on rails. Acceleration is mind bending, esp. with this car being 22 years old. The prior owner began having a few problems with the car so she parked it, not even realizing how special this car was.
Seating is comfortable, positioning is great, and being 6'3" I find that this car has plenty of leg room for me, however passengers in the back are cramped and uncomfortable.
I've wanted this exact kind of Camaro since childhood, and I am not only pleased with the car, but it exceeded my expectations in both performance and styling.
It has right now 255 horsepower and 320 ft/lb of torque, which is enough to keep up with a lot of modern day sports cars. Nothing makes me happier than pulling up in this car at a red light with some kid driving a turbo charged rice rocket and leaving him in my dust with an old faded maroon camaro.
I installed a Borla exhaust to give it more rumble, and soon to come is a new 327 to give it even more punch.
