1991 Hyundai Scoupe Base review from North America

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Starter went at 180000kms.

Rear brake cyl at 200000kms.

Replaced muffler at 220000kms.

General comments?

Bought from original owner for 12000$ Inside was/is spotless and outside still has very little rust. Car has been very reliable in any weather and has fairly close gearing so it's perfect for mountain travel cause you rarely need to gear down for passing/climbing considering it only puts out 81 HP. However, on freeways, it gets wound up pretty good at higher speeds. I usually cruise around 120km/h and the tach is around 3700 rpm. It will cruise on trips doing 145 very easily but high speeds aren't why people buy old econoboxes!

Repairs are reasonable for an import, however parts are a bit less readily available than say a civic, no big deal though. No leaks yet, but it started to puff a little blue in the morning around 200000kms. I slowed this to the point of being barely noticeable using a little Lucas Oil Treatment after oil changes.

Gas mileage has varied between 6.5L-5.9L per 100kms!!!

From mid October to late April I use about 6.5L/100k. I travel 200k round trip on a quiet 2 lane for work, at a constant speed, no traffic, crazy acceleration etc.. and I check EVERY TIME I fill up! From April to Mid October, its about 5.9L/100kms!! EVERY TIME!! Everything is the same except I do about 20km/h faster in the warmer months and get better mileage.

I thought it was more resistance from winter tires, some tire slippage on winter roads etc, but I changed tires over beginning April, yet mileage did not reflect change for a couple/three weeks or so. (same goes for October) We had cold crappy spring right up till mid/late April!!?? Plus, roads have not been snow covered since mid March. Can temperature difference make that significant a change? Either way, the car has been a pleasure to own.
