1997 Nissan Almera GTi review from UK and Ireland
"Get one now!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Very little. Engine etc has not caused any problems.
I have only needed to fix a few minor things like interior mirror falling off, brake pads.
General comments?
Well I bought this 100,000 mile example for about a grand. Spent about £600 on the engine by uprating exhaust, manifold, powerflow induction kit and chip, and when I got it dynoed, it showed 175bhp! I couldn't believe it. Spending so little money to get a car that handles so well, and goes pretty rapidly. I kept up with a Civic Type R the other day down a few straights and twisties, although his car did pull away slightly at the higher speed, he could not shake me on the twisties.
Brakes are great as standard, and have just fitted uprated pads, and they're even better.
Handling is good as well, but have found that getting decent tyres (Eagle F1's) makes the difference.
Interior is pretty dull, but front bucket seats are on their way, which will change things, although I must say that the standard wheel has a nice feel and the steering weight is good.
Boot is good size.
This car is a legend. I have owned other cars with lower mileage (MG ZR, Mondeo ST24, Jag X Type, Clio RSI) which haven't been as reliable or fun. Get one now, spend a bit on it and prepare to be pleased.
