1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 review from North America
"Excellent vehicle"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced the throttle position sensor at 30,000 miles (warranty covered it).
Replaced door ajar sensors after 3 years/62,000 miles ($16 each).
General comments?
Engine: 3.0 V6 has comfortable power and torque. Wish it didn't prefer mid-grade fuel (I would appreciate comments if anyone has a suggestion). Always had a drop in oil level between changes (dealer claims it's normal) However, emissions tests are excellent and never found a drop on the pavement.
4X4: Vacuum hublocks. They are wonderful.
Manual transmission: Feels the same as it did when brand new. It's great.
Cost to drive: I wish fuel economy was better (getting 16 city/ 19 highwy). But the cost to drive is still cheap because only basic maintenance is required and that's pretty inexpensive.
Interior: durable and very nice for a truck. Road noise is minimal.
Handling: I'm impressed. Very stable with good cornering.
Resale value: as a percentage of initial cost, it appears to be excellent.
