1986 Volvo 240 GLT review from UK and Ireland
"Heavy old road eater"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The car suffers with rust more than most Volvos as is is a 1986, but I have a mig welder and a grinder and can fix it myself.
I had to replace all the bushes with polybushes, as the old ones had given up, but that is understandable with a 22 year old car.
I only get around 25mpg average, that's about 70% short town journeys and 30% open roads. That's not so great, but when you consider that the car cost me £300 to buy, and I have spent about £800 on the upgrades and servicing it over 2 years, it kind of makes up for the bad fuel economy.
General comments?
The car handles a lot better than standard due to the fact that it is equipped with Bilstein HD shocks, lower and stiffer springs and some sticky 225 profile tyres. It out handles most normal road cars (bar scoobies and the like) and feels comfortable and stable at 100mph.
It could do with more power really, but it will do as it is for now.
The seats are comfy and I like driving it. There are a few rattles from the interior, not that you can hear them over the wind noise, meh.
