1999 Mercury Cougar review from North America
"Sporty cute lemon with durable engine"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Fuel pump failed at 36,000 miles, and at 50,000 miles.
Alternator failed twice at 150,000 miles.
Trunk's electric latch failed at 55,000 miles.
Front wheel bearings failed at 75,000 miles.
Steering pump failed at 150,000 miles.
General comments?
This version of the Cougar had recalls on the alternator wiring and fuel pumps. Many owners had problems similar to mine, but some had very serious engine failure problems. This version of the Cougar is most obviously a lemon. But, keep in mind that it has the Duratec engine, which is one of best engines made by Ford. The Duratec is based an engine originally designed and developed by Porsche. These engines have lifespans around the 150,000 miles mark, but my engine now has 165,000 on it. And, I have seen some engines with 200,000 miles or more.
