1991 Ford Taurus LX review from North America

"Not too shabby once you get them working"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Transmission never quite worked right. We ended up with a completely different re-built one.

Water pump failed.

Coin tray doesn't push in all the way.

General comments?

Well, this is a nice car for what it is. It's a passenger car, and that's what it's designed for. If/when you finally get the transmission working correctly, it's not really that bad of a car to drive. There is a lot of money required to get one of these working, generally, so I wouldn't pick one of these older models up.

The car performs decent enough. I have a feeling that if the car were lighter, lower and had even slightly wider tires it would perform wonderfully. The A/C does take a noteable bit from the engine however. So if I'm in a big hurry, I just stick it on vent until I get up to speed. If you want it to go though, take it OUT of overdrive. Overdrive seems to make the transmission lazy, but you shouldn't take the car much over 60mph if you're not in overdrive.

The interior is very nice. It's roomy, and I can fit 5 full-grown people fairly well. The mileage isn't too bad. You can generally go about 225 miles on a tank, and filling it is usually about $17-$19 in the neighborhood of 1.50 a gallon.

If you're looking for a SPORTY car, go buy the SHO type model or another model/make. If you're looking for a very practical car, go get one of these.
