1986 Chevrolet Caprice Classic review from North America

"An awesome car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front rotors and pads (normal wear), full metallic pads destroy the rotors and themselves (severe duty + police duty rotors and pads, cooling fins from hell on rotors and rear drums).

Master cylinder, booster and carburator.

Rear axle (my laying 20 foot rubber marks a lot made the axle housing go out-of-round and made the axle turn blue internally and externally).

Brake lines from the proportioner to all of rear the lines.

Gas tank (from sitting).

This car spent a lot of time sitting before I bought it, it severely added to the cars rapid aging (sitting kills cars).

Dual exhaust (TRUE DUALS!, no H or X pipe).

Valve seals cause a puff of smoke on startup only.

Oil consumption about 333 millilitres per 5,000 km.

I love this car. It holds up to my abusive driving VERY VERY VERY well. Other cars have NOT held up to my driving (friends cars, newer cars).

General comments?

I will buy one or two a year for restoration and drive these until the day I die. Previous owners I bought them from SEVERELY neglected the cars. I used to own a 1980 Caprice and IT even held up to my heavy footedness.

The 1986 I currently own was neglected so badly the front fenders rusted out so I can see the engine with the hood closed, AND the car's timing chain turned over at 302,870 kms to the point where it was exhausting from the carb and sucking in through the tailpipe. Timing chain replaced and the car was able to lay rubber after the first 15 minutes of warmup.

Well, I've had seven of them and I still can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.
