1986 Ford Escort Ghia review from UK and Ireland
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Almost certain rep abuse - so plenty of minor things like engine mounts to be replaced after purchase.
Front wheel alignment became easily disturbed - Ford garage embarked on a wild-goose chase - couldn't solve - blamed problem on 175/70 tyres I fitted to standard rims. Private mechanic found Ford had replaced steering rack wrongly (!) and traced fault to perished rubber shock mountings. This information might save someone £
General comments?
Things were wearing out, but the old shed always started and never broke down in 5 years. Sold at 110k with plenty of unrefined miles left in it.
Good economy and acceleration from the cement mixer CVH engine.
VV carb with autochoke is a curse - especially in the cold.
Slick gearbox.
Excellent high-geared steering but poor turning circle.
Brakes could be a lot better.
Rust becomes a problem on the chassis.
Rear suspension - being independent - really seems to grip but fit some decent front shocks because that doesn't grip so well - especially in the wet.
