1992 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 review from UK and Ireland
"VW's finest hour - sublime!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Exhaust fell off!
Broken into twice.
General comments?
Probably the last truly exciting car to wear the VW badge, the VR6 truly is a dream to own.
The narrow-angle V6 is creamy smooth, yet snarls beautifully as the revs build. It's also plenty quick enough to see off any hot hatch at the lights, as well as give some of the more expensive sports cars a run for their money. Thankfully this car was designed before VW felt the need to make everything weigh two tonnes, and boy does it show!
Handling is awesome, at least on a par with my previous 306 S16. Steering has lots of feel, and the turn in is pin sharp. It will also oversteer on response to a closure of the throttle, yet you have to be an idiot to lose it, such is the feedback and response from the controls.
Reliability has been superb. The exhaust fell off last year, but as the car is almost 10 years old and is fast approaching a six figure mileage, this is not unreasonable in my opinion. The replacement cost was extortionate though, as are all parts for the car. The other problem is that the car seems to attract thieving low-lives who just have to have a go. Thankfully the four point immobiliser has defeated the idiots both times. Didn't stop them destroying the door lock getting in though.
It's not a cheap car to run. Insurance is high, and fuel consumption rarely betters 25 mpg. However, it is one of the most complete cars I've ever owned, doing everything either competently, brilliantly or astonishingly, depending on what you are looking at. It also looks gorgeous.
I would recommend this car to anyone.
