1991 Renault Clio Fiji review from UK and Ireland
"A great car if looked after"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Quite a lot...
In the first year of ownership the rear drums, pads and bearings needed replacing, and the front ball joints needed replacing.
Recently found that the front stabaliser bar had broken off both sides (cheap to fix).
The main problem with the car is the electrics, the lamps on the dash sometimes need a tap to make them come on! The fan/heater keeps breaking - it doesn't seem like they designed the wiring to take the kind of current it needs (I've had a look and the plugs are melted a bit at the dash end and the fan end, they need replacing).
The spring on the accelerator keeps snapping (hopefully I've fixed that now).
The spring tightening the gear stick keeps un-clipping.
Many people probably wouldn't notice the last two if this happened, but if you are observant you can feel the difference.
General comments?
Generally it is a very nice car, comfortable and reliable.
Although I have had trouble with the electrics, I've never had trouble with the important electrics like the external lights, windscreen wipers etc.
From a driving situation I think the pedals are a bit hard, but at least they are all equally hard. My previous car was a Rover Metro though and they have particularly light pedals.
The car performs well both in economy and power, however you need to keep it serviced. It's amazing the difference an oil change and new spark plugs and filters can make.
