1986 Volvo 740 GLT review from North America
"A rocket ship with all the creature comforts of a ocean liner!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Two months after buying the car, the transmission gave out. Coolant had leaked into the cooler lines and had eaten away at the friction seals. After replacing two Taurus transmissions, I thought I was in the clear buying a Volvo. I guess I was wrong.
Lots of lenses had to be replaced, both front lenses were broken (which seems to be on all 740's). Also the driver's side turn signal.
Lots of interior parts were broken or missing, but after a few visits to a local wrecker I was able to get them fairly cheap.
The lumbar support is broken on the driver's side, making it uncomfortable at times, but the passenger side works and is very comfortable to ride in.
The heated seats don't work for unknown reasons as well.
General comments?
The car is amazing and has never been beat on the street (except by a 911 turbo).
People seem baffled as to why they are being beat out by a Volvo sedan.
Handling seems to be a bit sloppy at times, but other times is great. Ride seems to be a problem, and can be rough at times.
Wind noise on the highway is unacceptable for such an expensive car.
