1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby review from North America
"Inexpensive Honda eater!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Head gasket went at around 100,000 miles, but this is to be expected with a high mileage car with an aluminum head.
The A555 Getrag transmission was rebuilt at 90,000 miles because a less than intelligent mechanic didn't use the specified 5w30 oil in the gear case.
The paint on all mid 80's era Dodge cars loses its clear coat, but hey - you expect paint to last 15 years? Really tho, the Chrysler Corp 80's paint left a bit to be desired.
With regular service as advised by the owners manual, this car has lasted for 180,000 miles so far. No rod knocks, compression is still good, and I smoke those rice imports with no problem.
One mistake people make with these cars - make sure the turbo has a chance to cool before you shut the car down. I idle the car for at least 15-20 seconds to let coolant and oil flow through the turbo before shutdown, or up to a minute after a hard run. This saves the turbocharger bearings, and has helped my turbo to last 180,000 miles plus.
Who says only Japanese cars can last?
General comments?
These cars are becoming more and more rare, with parts becoming a bit difficult to locate. If you don't have a bit of mechanical aptitude, look elsewhere. G bodies are incredible performance cars with lots of possibilities.
I love my mini Mopar, and take good care of her.
