1997 Plymouth Neon Highline review from North America

"Cheap for a reason... Dodge's dirty little lemon"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

What hasn't gone wrong with the car???

First was the three times I ran out of gas when the gauge read 1/4 tank. Had to be towed because it wasn't until the third time that the mechanic could figure out what the problem was.

Then the transmission started to do bizarre things, revving when I wasn't moving and not accelerating.. it felt like I was just a bad stick driver when the car was an automatic.

Then I had to replace a gasket.

The oil started to leak, they replaced another gasket, but the oil leakage continued.

The brakes squeaked from day one. Got new ones, they squeaked too. Spent another $200 to have the brakes cleaned (pretty sure that was a rip off from a mechanic who I won't go to again). Brakes still squeaked.

The windshield cracked.

I was on a trip when the radiator fan blew. Stranded and had to spend another $500 just to get the car home.

Replaced another gasket, tires at about 65,000.

Failed a smog check at 65,000 miles because the check/engine light was on. Replaced an oxygen sensor, check engine light was off long enough to pass the smog check, and then came back on again.

General comments?

Sold the car for pennies just so that I wouldn't be afraid of every little noise and all the many things that could still go wrong.

I once read about the Neon that it is Plymouth's dirty little secret.. this is so true. I wouldn't buy another one unless I was a mechanic or if I was rich enough to maintain it, oh wait, if I had money I would have never bought this car in the first place.
