1971 Land Rover Series 3 2286cc Series III petrol hard- review from UK and Ireland
"Way outclassed by the Lada Niva I owned later"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Chassis rot requiring replacement of both dumb-irons, 3 outriggers and the rear cross member - all when the car was only 12 years old.
Severe wear of Zenith carburetter body, at the throttle spindle.
Layshaft bearing failure in 4F1R gearbox.
Aftermarket Fairey overdrive gearbox became very noisy.
Engine wouldn't hold tappet clearances between services.
Oil consumption only 150 miles per pint.
Rotten door and tailgate frames. Doortops required replacement when only 14 years old.
General comments?
Over-estimated, and difficult to drive. Poor visibility due to low setting of the narrow front window, and stupid wiper pattern caused by the split in the screen at the middle.
Ineffective heater.
Very noisy, and the ride is inexcusably hard.
