1989 Peugeot 309 SR Injection review from UK and Ireland
"The best 309 bar the GTi!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Head gasket at 100000; engine replaced (lasted only 100 miles before major crankshaft problem developed).
Original engine repaired and re-conditioned, but crank prob developed after spending 5 minutes @ 6500RPM (not surprising really) racing a darn Saxo VTS 16v.
Front suspension arm replaced (same type as GTi incidently).
1 Door and boot actuators inoperative at time of purchase.
General comments?
This is a very quick car with handling much better then other cars of its age and class.
Interior is spacious with good layout, and velour seats look/feel and are more comfortable than those on many new cars (drivers has adjustable lumbar support!).
Excellent general spec. - ie EW, SR, Remote CL, map reading lamp, rear courtesy lamp etc. etc.. The car does not have PAS though and steering can be heavy, especially with wider than recommended tyres.
I have had bad luck with engines in my car, but the 1.6 GTi unit used in the car is otherwise very tough and very powerful at 115 BHP. It should also be noted that the gearbox is ultra slick, but the close ratios are not suited to high speed motorway cruising.
