1983 Peugeot 205 GL review from Spain
"Unassuming, lovable bestseller"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Brake drum leaked, cost me 100 Euro(sorry for English)
hopeless damp starter. Had to change HT leads and plugs.
General comments?
Hates cold weather and above all dampness.
Yet after changing HT leads (one of which had very high resistance, so HT must have crept to mass instead of going to plugs), things have improved.
Also, here in Spain, moist and cold not such an issue.
Also, I found that if you pay attention to the way you start your car, things improve a lot. No "pumping" at start, it's contra-productive! Just pull the throttle out full, put your right foot firmly on brakes (so that prevent yourself from "compulsive pumping"), and keep starter going as long as it takes, up to 30secs, and all goes well!
ALso, choose largest battery possible, and use plugs with 4 electrodes and do not try to save money on them. Change HT leads and sitributor head every 5 years (not expensive.
I got this car from my dad, and he had bought it as a 3rd hand car. It was 14 years old now, it will be 20 next year.
Doesn't use a drop of oil. Amazing.
It's the cheapest version of 1983, so I refuse to complain about comfort.
Here in Spain, I DO miss A/C.
I use unleaded gasoline, although it's specified for leaded gas.
I've gotten used to this car, I like it despite it's character.
Once it runs, there's no stopping it.
I wouldn't buy a Peugeot new, as there's better value for money out there.
My next car will be Japanese: Nissan or Toyota or Honda.
THe Peugeot 206 disappoints me. I don't see any real breakthru on their engine.
