1998 Nissan Primera GX review from UK and Ireland
"Better, cheaper and far more fun version of a vauxhall vectra"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Didn't start once over 3 years - but that was due to me leaving the car in gear and turning the key - no warning buzzers, just a "click". Put the automatic back into park and started straight away!
Front suspension made creaking noises after 15,000 miles - dealer fixed this just within warranty by replacing joints, but only because I told them where to look - they 'couldn't' find the fault before then (another website highlighted this issue with this model)
Suffers from sticky brakes when left in the rain overnight - back brakes can stick on and have to drive forwards to release (my cavalier used to do that too?)
Seats are uncomfortable over long distance (over 100 miles) and the drivers lumbar support is completely in the wrong place (I'm 5'11")
Dealership need watching when servicing - they like to add in "freebies" (eg small can of oil) - things you don't need and are not free at all when you check the bill.
General comments?
Very reliable car - so far!
Mileage is not brilliant - but being an automatic and large engine size, I expected that. Switch on the air conditioning and ensure the next petrol station isn't over 300 miles away!
Road holding is superb. When buying I compared this to a vectra - where the vectra's back-end slid, the primera's stayed stuck to the road. Now I see why it won all those touring car rallys!
Very practical - everything goes in the boot, lots of scratches on the plastic - but nothing breaks (it regularly gets filled with b+q visits)
