1982 Ford Fairmont XD review from Australia and New Zealand
"Comfortable road car with hi-performance tourer potential, sweet!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When I bought the car it had a tear in the drivers seat.
Sitting idle for a year the old plugs rusted and went loose in the head.
The body has minor spots of rust.
The door locking mechanisms are in need of some attention.
The fuel and water gauges have different readings depending on how hard I hit them.
General comments?
These cars are built tough. My fathers Ford XD wagon T-boned straight over a kerb and leapt straight through a double brick wall, all at 130 km/h in the wet. He still managed to drive the car to work, he sustained no injuries!!!
While being stock my XD is still fast, it would give those ET turbos a good run. With mods it could be seriously fast as it only weighs 1350kg.
Handling and steering can be improved with some nolathane rubbers and a good lowering. Due to the bridgestone G-grids and globe-liners it's got some grip.
The interior is this cars strong point, extremely roomy, soft and warm. A tad dated, but very clean, plush, comfortable and in near new condition.
The XD Fairmont wears gold paint in OK condition.
Any ideas on a carburated turbo project would be appreciated. Maybe twin RB20 turbos or a single to4???
