1967 MG B Roadster review from UK and Ireland
"Wonderful investment for a classic enthusiast"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
For a 35 year old vehicle, nothing failed which took me by surprise.
SU fuel pump, now replaced with Hall Effect solid state unit.
Fuel Tank leaked due to corrosion whilst full, of course!) /replaced.
Fuel Sender unit & associated electrics failed/ replaced.
Miscellaneous electrical problems, but car maker no longer use 'bullet connectors' for this reason.
Steering rack failed/ replaced.
F O/S wheel bearing rumbled/ replaced.
Transmission yoke replacement necessary.
Needs Periodic replacement of rear L/A suspension dampers with exchange units. (leaking dampers are not acceptable for MOT purposes.)
Etc...
General comments?
This car rewards the owner who is prepared to do a diligent service every 3,000 miles. Oil & filters changed and nipples greased, ignition and brakes dismantled, relubed and readjusted.
An ongoing project for the DIY motorist, expensive for those who like to keep hands clean.
This is one of the last years when the Chrome Bumper MGB was not factory fitted with anti smog bolt-ons, and performance of the 1.8 is significantly better than for later models.
My '67B with O/D can reach 105mph (I am told) can certainly keep up with motorway traffic, but is in a class of its own on B roads or forestry tracks.
(ever heard of opposite lock!)
For added security I fitted Vacuum Brake assistance (the car in front probably has ABS) and a 4 point fitting Roll Bar which neatly fits beneath the soft hood, when raised.
The small windscreen does not keep a 70mph gale out of your eyes (specs desirable) and I need a rear wind baffle (home made) to keep chill winter draughts from paralyzing my neck in winter top down mode.
The 1967 driving experience (no assisted steering, early design synchros, overdrive rather than a 5th or 6th gear) is comfortable (as long as you are not relying on an efficient heater) exhilarating and sometimes a challenge, but in touring I find that more than a 200 mile journey across country in one day can be rather tiring. (much more relaxing in my BMW!)
