1991 Mitsubishi Colt GTi 16V review from UK and Ireland
"A quick and cheap alternative to a mk2 golf"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Spark plugs cause flat spot in revs with age.
HT leads needed replacing at 80,000 miles to solve loss of power.
Front suspension mounts replaced at 70,000 miles.
Front shocks changed at 80,000 miles.
General comments?
Very reliable and strong car if serviced regularly, not like other flimsy Japanese car's.
Ignition retards when engine is cold to restrict performance and protect engine - which gets driver into good habit!
16V engine great between 4-8,000 revs. But sluggish at lower revs, engine loosens up the more you push it.
Performance similar to 1.9 Peugeot 205 and 16v mk2 golfs, but lower insurance group.
Steering a bit vague, but fitting lower springs helped this and stiffened whole car up, making it feel more like a hot hatch.
Boot a joke for space.
Only really bad point is the cost of parts, which are often dealer only i.e. HT leads over £100 (use Internet to trace second hand where you can)
